Route
So many times.
We took it together
And talked on the
Way,
Noticing the evergreens
Along the highway
That were anything but
Green.
They were brown.
Would they recover?
We knew which rest
Stop was at just the
Right place.
Once we took a side
Trip to see the covered
Bridge.
The two hour drive went
Quickly as we
Sat comfortably beside
Each other,
My hand often resting on
His shoulder or
Rubbing his neck.
I made the same trip
Today.
The evergreens were green
Once again.
They had survived after all.
The rest stop was still
At just the right spot.
There were no side trips
Today,
Only memories of past
Days
When the seat beside me
Wasn't empty.
I wondered, as i
Drove,
How many trips I'll need
To take until
It seems normal
To drive to my daughter's
House alone.
