At a women's retreat.
The topic:
Singlehood.
I represented the widows.
How quickly my status
Changed!
When I had been asked to
Serve,
I had been widowed once,
And now, twice.
I had lots to say on the
Subject,
And as the questions flowed,
My enthusiasm
Flowed too.
At points, I waxed
Eloquently
As I am prone to do,
With hand motions
And facial expressions
To match.
I was blessed to have my
Daughter in the
Audience,
And afterwards
Her words were music to
My ears,
And love to my soul.
"You don't embarrass me
Anymore, like when I
Was a teenager.
I'm proud of you.
I'm proud you're
My momma."
I'm still me,
But she's matured.
