They're either applauded or deemed a
Disgrace.
I'm trying to formulate my own
Opinion when it comes to monuments.
Even in the Bible statues get a
Bad rap.
Golden calves led to evil.
Three godly men were tossed in a
Furnace because they refused to bow to
A giant image of a mere man.
A statue of Baal was knocked to the
Ground.
Toppling statues is nothing new.
"Erase the wicked past," one group shouts.
"Preserve it so we don't forget," others
Shout back.
But who decides which should be left
Standing?
The war rages on.
Would we be better off with no statues at all?
I would hate to lose Lady Liberty.
Even she is no longer safe.
Perhaps every monument should bear a
Disclaimer like the drug ads that include
All the deadly side effects.
"This person did some good things, but
Note the long list of his unsavory ones.
View at your own risk."
Frankly, I have more questions than
Answers.
But I'm sure of this.
Any image that takes the place of
God is forbidden, whether it is
Erected in a downtown plaza or
In my heart.
