As I was driving to my meeting this Morning, I noticed the row of flags waving at Half mast. It took me a moment to realize the Display was to honor our two local Police officers who were gunned down as They were just doing their jobs. I choked up thinking about the Families who are trying to comprehend Their new normal, Trying to cope with unexpected grief. When I stopped at a gas station to pick up A cup of coffee I noticed a police car parked Outside. When I walked in I asked the officer, "Is it okay if I Give you a hug?" "Yes," he said, and we shared a tender Moment. But then I heard his conversation with the Girl behind the cash register. Her dad was a policeman too. In fact, he would normally have been on duty, but His friend, the fallen one, was taking his place That day. "Oh my!" I said, and I went around the counter and Gave the blonde gal a hug, and a tract, too. "We were all good friends," she said. She hadn't yet been able to drive through Westerville. When I got back home, I removed the flag from My drawer where it had been stored for several Months and raised it to the top of the flag pole that Jack had erected many years ago. And then I lowered it to half mast. |
