The doorbell rang.
I greeted the couple standing there and
Welcomed them in.
Their visit was poignant, for these
Folks used to stop by to encourage
Jack when he was ailing.
Now this husband faces dementia too.
I recognized the signs, not just in the
Blank faced man but also in his patient
Wife.
She diverted his attention when necessary and
Glanced knowingly at me when we both
Recognized he was confused.
Conversation will never be normal between
The two of them ever again.
His wife and I couldn't talk freely either.
But we chatted as though everything
Was fine.
My heart hurt, for I knew what was
Looming ahead.
I locked eyes with my friend as we
Hugged good-by, grateful that words
Aren't necessary to express understanding
And love.
