Church, I often heard the
Oldtimers add two words to their
Statements.
"I'll get my crops in this week,
Lord willing."
"We'll meet back here next
Wednesday night, Lord willing."
The words weren't a cop out.
The folks simply recognized their
Limited understanding and
God's sovereignty.
James warned us not to be
Presumptuous, not to assume that
We will even see tomorrow. *
My memory of Lillian is still fresh.
She planned to meet her friend for
Lunch, and in a moment's time a truck
Struck her and she was whisked home.
Meanwhile, her friend waited, and waited
And waited.
Now that I'm the same age as those
Old folks back in my church, I find
Myself copying them.
I'm learning I must hold my plans loosely
In my hands.
Recently, when I checked out at the
Doctor's office, the receptionist asked,
"Can I schedule you for next year?"
"Sure. But that takes faith to believe that
I'll be here."
I shared Lillian's story and how we all
Need to be prepared to die.
And then I told her I WOULD be back in
Twelve months, "Lord willing."
