There were about ten oldsters gathered in The nursing home waiting for the singing to begin. Several were in wheelchairs, one had no leg, and Some blankly stared. A jovial once-upon-a-time pastor was Hampered by a stroke, but his spirit was intact. After the inspiring music, my part was to speak. But how to relate? As a former preschool teacher, I settled on "Show and Tell." I pulled objects from my bag to describe my life. A feed sack represented growing up on a farm. Mom made dresses for me out of the Decorative sacks that once held food for animals. I shared a picture of my little country church and Pointed out the colored beads on my bracelet to Explain how I met Jesus there at an old fashioned Revival service. I help up Hope, a wooden sign made by a friend. Tears escaped as I expressed the pain of Losing my loved ones. My brother died shortly after he was hit on his Tractor right in front of that stone church. I lost two husbands. But I exclaimed, "Despite the grief we are never, ever Without God's HOPE! Never!" I shared the bird clip that perches by My kitchen sink. It's a silent reminder that Jesus cares for the Sparrows, and much more, He Cares for us. As we sang "His Eye Is on the Sparrow," I Was suddenly aware that the birds in the Cage behind us twittered along. The aphasic pastor gently reached over to hold the Hand of the memory challenged woman. It was a "God moment." As we finished I tied a wordless bracelet onto each of the Listener's wrists, so appropriate for those Who couldn't speak. With hand motions the joyful pastor made me Understand that he wanted two bracelets, an extra one To give away. I don't know how much the battle weary residents Really understood, but I know that all of us in That room strongly, surely sensed God's presence. |
