Kids were heading to school.
I saw lots of the familiar
Yellow busses, and I was glad that
School is back in session and
No longer on-line.
But I could never be a school bus
Driver.
I can barely maneuver my
Compact car.
Nor could I handle the drama
Aboard a bus.
When I was a school girl, one of
My bus drivers often yelled at
Us, trying to keep us in line.
We were so nasty to a substitute
Driver that he simply stopped the
Bus on a back country road until
The spit balls stopped flying and
We quieted down.
He was never our driver again.
I can't imagine how it is today when
Kids try to sneak guns to school rather
Than chewing gum.
I applaud bus drivers.
They are up early and face peril
Every day.
They must be both kind and firm.
They must keep calm under pressure.
They must contend with impatient
Drivers, stormy weather outside and
Stormy temperaments inside.
In my book they are unique servants,
Overlooked heroes.
I could never be one.
But I'm grateful that courageous
Women and men are willing to get
Behind the wheel and drive our
Kids to school.
