Walked into the living room,
Looked at the portrait of Jack and
Me over the fireplace and said,
"Merry Christmas, Honey."
While carols were playing on the radio, I
Quietly unwrapped the gifts under my
Tree, given by Jack's kids so I would have
Something to open on December 25th.
I wept as I removed the wrappings,
Moved by the love, and
Placed them back around my small
Tabletop tree.
I began to prepare Christmas dinner when
The door bell surprised me, and
In swooped our grown up grandkids dressed in
Outrageous pajamas, one a Cheshire cat, and
The other a unicorn.
Disbelief,
Chatter,
Laughter,
More gifts, and then they were gone.
My dinner guests came next,
Six of us, not blood relatives, but
Family, nevertheless, because of
His blood that joins us.
We ate heartily,
Laughed heartily,
Played dominoes heartily, and then
They returned home too.
And now my day has ended just as it began,
Alone in my house,
Alone with my mixture of
Happy/sad thoughts,
But because of the One who came,
Not really alone,
Never alone.
