It's appropriate on Independence Day that I just finished the 651 page volume, JOHN ADAMS. Unlike my school days I now find history Fascinating, and the author of the book, David McCullough, is a renowned historian. Reading about our Revolutionary War, I Believe we would have been doomed apart From God's intervention. At Manhattan, Washington's army "deserted in Droves...and fled without firing a shot. Stealing by his troops was rampant...His Army was falling apart." * Nevertheless, time and again the soldiers were Miraculously spared, and in the end the Underdogs won. Speaking of General Washington, John Adams, our Second president said, "The part played by the Hand of God in the choice of such a man to Head the nation was so clear as to be Apparent to all." ** On this July 4th I also recognize God's hand in The founding of our flawed but great nation, and I Pray that He will never remove it. (Remarkably, both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on the same day: July 4, 1826) *P. 159 ** P. 401 |
