The ones we walked through at
The park,
The ones that shaded our cabin in
The Hocking Hills,
The ones planted around our condo,
All except one.
An evergreen placed too close to
Our window blocked the direct sunlight
Needed for our tomato plants and
For illumination in our living room.
Jack joked about driving nails in it
To kill it.
(Not that his method woud have
Sufficed.)
We just abided it.
But when I drove home the other
Day, I was shocked to see the
Tree was gone.
The yard crew had sawed it down.
I guess it wasn't as healthy as
It looked.
Often when someone dies, we
Plant a tree as a memorial to the
Departed one.
I laughed out loud to think in this
Case a tree was cut down in
Jack's memory.
Missy said that maybe he arranged it.
But now that it's gone,
I must admit,
I miss it just a bit.
