What could I use for an object lesson at the Sunday service at the nursing home? Mom's apron popped into my mind. She always wore an apron when I was a Child. It protected her dress as she cooked and Cleaned and tended her chickens. It was a handy carry-all to transport veggies from Her huge garden to the kitchen. And when my mom wrapped me in her Apron to comfort me I felt loved and secure. Mom sewed new aprons each year, some for Everyday and prettier ones she saved for Sundays. I had tucked away a couple of them in my Closet just to remind me of her. But what was my spiritual lesson? The word came to me: servanthood. My mother was always serving her family and She pictured Jesus to me. He came not to be served, but to serve others. He stooped to wash His disciples' feet. He told His followers that if they wanted to be a Leader, they must be a servant. He gave His life as a sacrifice for humanity. I placed the apron, a towel, and a cross into my Sharing bag and pulled the items out as I taught the Lesson. And I asked the little group of ladies, "How can you serve others here?" "We can smile." "We can check to make sure that someone is Okay." "We can be a friend to someone who is lonely." Great ideas. I hung the apron back in my closet. One day I'm sure my daughters will dispose of it. But for now, it takes up little space. It reminds me of the way my mom served my Family, always putting us first. And it symbolizes the sacrifice of the One Who was her example. |
