Purchase a hot cup of coffee to
Sip on my trip.
I look forward to the two hour drive to
My daughter's house.
Suspended between my home and
Hers I'm introspective.
The fields, golden with corn stalks, remind
Me of harvest time from my childhood, and
I'm a bit homesick.
I spot the familiar landmarks along the way,
The decorative barn,
The Paradise Tree Farm.
I take note that the six blue silos are
Still standing.
They were once high tech but now are
Sorely outdated just like I am.
How grateful I am that I'm still able to
Make the trip by myself,
Well, not actually by myself.
I talk to Jesus and sing praise songs to Him,
Grateful for His companionship as we
Cross the miles.
I'm delighted that the trees are beginning to
Show splotches of color.
When the billboard for Grandpa's Cheese Barn greets
Me I know just an hour remains.
The miles seem to pass a bit more quickly now,
And when I reach my final exit, I'm aware of
The transition.
My mind switches from the scenery.
I no longer focus on my journey but on
The warm welcome I will receive when
It's over.
