It seemed like a good time to
Tackle my closet.
I noticed a box almost hidden in
The corner labeled "Wedding Cards."
I wasn't sure I could tackle those, but
I pulled them down and began to
Read the greetings sent to us
Fifteen years ago.
Our courtship took everyone by
Surprise,
Including Jack and me,
And the messages exuded our
Friend's excitement for us.
They shared our pure joy.
As I opened each card,
I wept,
I sobbed,
I wailed.
I could barely bear to read them,
But I had to do it one last time.
I saved only two items from
The box,
Our wedding vows we had
Written,
And the program with the words to
"Great Is Thy Faithfulness," the hymn
We sang in my daughter's living room when
Jack and I became one, and the
Hymn whose words still give me
Courage.
I stuffed the congratulation cards
Into a plastic grocery bag,
Carried it to the garage and
Dropped it with a thud into the
Garbage can.
The honeymoon is over.
My Jack is gone.
And I will never need to go
Through the agony of reading our
Wedding cards again.
