Noticed an older couple
Holding hands, and I longingly
Watched a younger pair
Laughing at a private conversation,
Trying not to Stare,
Care.
My heart ached at remembering how
Jack and I, starry eyed, used to
Stroll in together too.
But God jolted me.
"Look at Dick heading bravely
Toward the door by himself.
His wife, dementia bound, is in
A "home," not her own.
Do you see your friend sitting
In her regular pew,
Still teaching school after
Forty years; never married?
Count the widows in your
Small section.
(Seven of us.)
You're not alone in your
Aloneness, Dorothy,
Not from a human perspective
Nor from Mine.
Keep in mind that you're
Always,
Lovingly,
Paired up with Me."
