Bicycle was rolled onto the platform,
A tandem type, one built for two.
It belonged to a committed couple who
Have logged 30,000 miles on the bike as
They have traversed the country together.
"It's a picture of marriage," our pastor told us,
"A husband and wife pedaling in unison
Toward a common goal."
If the two pull in different directions, the bike,
The marriage will crash.
I know the couple.
Barb always lets Matt take the lead position.
It's how they function best.
She trusts him and respects his
Judgement because he loves her and
Would sacrifice his life for hers, just as
Christ did for the church.
Being in front makes him the first
Target in the face of danger.
Likewise, I felt secure when Jack was my
Protector and took responsibility for
Our home.
He spoke up for me,
Insisted I see the doctor about my
Bad hip, and held me tightly when
I was scared.
Since he loved the Lord and studied
His Word, he led me spiritually as well.
But gradually, as Jack's dementia worsened,
We began to switch roles.
One day I realized I was the one in
Charge, and I felt out of sync, inadequate for
My task.
I was forced to take the lead in our
Marriage out of necessity,
But it was a position I would never in a
Lifetime have chosen.
