Our assignment for our Christmas Brunch was to bring along an Ornament, one that held a special Meaning for us. I brought two. My girls must have been in about the Third grade when they decorated the Red felt hearts. Inside, they tucked personal notes. The messages, printed out on Lined paper, have become Brittle with age. I handle the mementos with care. I work to decipher Missy's missive: "Because I love Jesus, I will try To always be kind." Rachel wrote in cursive and I Chuckle at her formal greeting. "Dear Dorothy," She continues, "I hope you have a Merry Christmas. I hope I do to. Christmas does not mean just Presents it means Jesus's birthday Too. I love you. Love, Rachel." From their earliest years my girls Learned that Christmas isn't just About gifts, but about THE Gift. I'm grateful to that long ago teacher. Thanks to her assignment, each Christmas I can unfold the notes and Savor the sweet simple sentiments from My little girls' hearts to mine. |
