Years ago I avoided communion at
Church because it included
Footwashing.
Even though Jesus washed His
Disciple's feet and told us to follow
His example, I rationalized that the
Practice was for ancient times and
No longer applied.
But when my husband and I finally
Decided to participate, my
Attitude changed.
Stooping at the foot of a sister,
Gently splashing water from a basin
Onto her feet, drying them with a long
Towel tied around my waist and then
Standing up to give her a hug and a
Word of encouragement no longer seemed
Strange, but appropriate and a blessing.
The act is not just a picture of
Humility and the joy of serving others, but
It's a reminder that day after day Jesus does
The necessary work of cleansing us from
Our sins.
Our last communion service was especially
Meaningful because my step-daughter-in-law
Joined me.
It's just been months since the one we both
Loved died.
We ate our meal sitting side by side and then
Walked to the separate room where she
Knelt at my feet and washed them,
And then I did the same for her.
As we embraced each other we
Shared our grief.
We shared our bond in Jesus and the
Hope that this life isn't the end.
Communion in heaven will be awesome,
Beyond belief.
