When I opened my mailbox
I couldn't imagine who
Had sent me a package.
But when I opened up the
Decorated box and
Found the lovely handcrafted
Napkin rings,
I wanted to weep.
I know you fashioned them from
A sorrowing heart facing
Sadness every waking
Moment of your day, and
Probably disturbing you
At night too.
You bear a burden that has
No end in sight.
I imagine working with your
Hands, creating beauty,
Was therapy for your
Heavy spirit.
From your broken heart to
Mine, my friend,
Your gift comforted us both.
I'm grateful.
(This friend's husband has a type
of deepening dementia that induces rages.)
