David McCullough.
It especially intrigued me because it
Is the story of my home state, Ohio.
Who knew the terrible trials that the
Settlers endured?
Who knew that but for the vote of one
Staunch man our state would have
Allowed slavery?
That one man, Ephraim Cutler, so ill he could
Barely walk, took his stand and prevented the
Monstrous scourge from invading Ohio.
The patriot was pro-education as well,
Responsible for establishing free public
Schools for every child.
Not surprisingly, Ephraim was also
Pro-God.
He saw the Sovereign's hand in the affairs of
Men.
Who knew the name of this noble man and
Others like him, just as stalwart and true,
Pioneers who walked where I now walk.
Who knew?
Not I.
But now I do, and I'm grateful that the author
Took the time to tell me.
"On the day the school bill finally passed in the
house...Ephraim turned and raising his hand said,
'Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace,
according to thy word; for mine eyes have
seen thy salvation.'" p.217 (Luke 2:29,30)
